I actually stole this lesson idea from Mark V (notice I am giving him credit to him) at the Starlite Cafe. He puts up 10 New Words every week as a challenge to writers. The goal is to use 10 seemingly unrelated words in a poem each week. It can be a true challenge to use the words each week and have a poem that makes sense. I went through some of the lists and culled ones that I think are interesting and do-able for beginning poets.
If you want more, check out the Starlite Cafe. I took a course for my MFA in Creative Writing program at Hamline University and Juliet Patterson gave us an assignment very similar to the 10 Word Challenge: (1) an obscure African country; (2) a vegetable; (3) a constellation; (4) something about your home town; (5) a window; (6) a cutting or punching tool; (7) a stamp; (8) an artist; and (9) a ship or boat.
