Marsha
Rogers
I spent more than twenty-five years as a classroom teacher in California and Nevada. While still teaching, I worked on the Nevada State curriculum for English/Language Arts. In this capacity I gained an understanding of curriculum development, child development, and how state curricula impacts the individual teacher.
In the early 90's my small community in Nevada got dial-up connection to the Internet. As a teacher I quickly saw the implications of this for my students. Students without access to libraries could have the same opportunities as those who did. Connections to the world were far easier. I quickly developed a network of contacts with teachers around the world. Not only that, but I suddenly had access to thinking and practices I had never before had without long-distance travel to local colleges and universities. The potential is still there.
In 1999 I joined the staff at CESA #3 (Cooperative Educational Service Agency) in Wisconsin. There I was able to put to use what I had learned about both curriculum and technology. Working with teachers in grades K-12 and in all curricular areas, I was able to develop my concept of how students learn across all grades and content areas. I was able to refine my ideas and practices as a staff developer.
In a short number of years I have come to define my beliefs and techniques. I continue to search the web, as I did in the very beginning in Hawthorne, Nevada. The writings of Gardner and Vygotsky strongly influence my practices. I am constantly searching out "best practices" to share with teachers and administrators.
My
basic belief is that technology (not just computers) is a tool all teachers need
to examine and experiment with. Technology is not an "add-on"
phase that will shortly pass. We, as educators, need to learn to use the
computer in our classrooms just as we learned to use the overhead projector, the
video cassette player, and, yes, the chalkboard. Computers are only one
more tool in a teacher's bag of tricks. The more effectively we use all
our tools, the better teachers all will become.
